Desc: First of all, i like to say thanks to all for comments, thank you.
And now about results:
You see that rendering time very close, i must say equal. That was big surprise for me, i was thinking that displacement will be faster than polygonal grass, but know i now that i can use grass instead displ.
I rendered every test 3 times and choose the best one, another one thing that I don`t use the same amount of grass in every generator (they make it in different way: Count, Distance between etc., but i tried to make it equal for look.
and the last one, don`t look at render time, take a look at Total Triangels, definitely mine winner : Fust&Fur., but don`t forget that Displacement did not make any extra polygons.
Note: Mine opinion subjective, and can`t be used like argument that generator better or that worse.

thanks for putting the time Tong
yea, hair is a big surprise, it`seems it was never created to use like polygons objects, only like Cinema part.
or maybe i just don`t know how to cook it

why did you put Hair in the vote
it`s very democratic ;-)
maybe someone can use it, i sure it can be used on 64 bit Windows with some big memory 4+ gb,
but i don`t have it :( so who use it can vote too.

I like the colours of the displacement image more then the other ones...
...even if the grass structure is not so good as in the other cases.
I had some tries with displacement grass on myself too..
..the results were not bad but the rendertimes exploded after increasing the GI and displacement quality.
So for now I gave up and will do it in post like before...
Here is one of my test images (posted already in a thread about displacement)

Displacement looks like grass, Dpit looks like what we wish the grass looked like. Have to go with displacement.
add scene file in first message.
if someone could make image with Hair, it will be really cool.

hey tong, is vray fur a special max shader or is it vray? is this shader based on displacement or how does this work?
It`s Vray shader, not Max, no displacement.
VRayFur is a very simple procedural fur plugin. The fur is generated only during render time and is not actually present in the scene.

the big advantage of vrayfur, i think, it built-in vray, and it use vray instance system, so the rendering of it don`t give problem with polygons.
vlado or Renato can correct me if I wrong.

i think the best solution would be proxies with vrayfur combined with displacement. i guess the evermotion-guys do it that way .
my grass wip
i think diplacement works only good for short blades of lawn or carpets in this manner. not perfect till now.
i hope proxies and vrayfur will make it. i think stefan wrote something, that proxies will not be so easy to integrate...

we sure do our best to add all,
first priority was to impleemtn c4d shaders, next step we alraedy work on rebuilding vray to be able to use c4d+vray shaders both, when we have this adding a shader plug like vrayfur is nor problem:-)

hi tong,
sorry for answering late,
this was a very quick test and i have not saved that particular scene, but i know:
-diffuse layer:psd-file with two tileable grass-maps in blending mode (textures from an evermotion exterior-scene)
-displacement: noise-shader (random) with very low global-setting.
-mapping parameters: 6, -3, keep continuity
-geometry parameters: gobal parameters off, edge length 1.8, max subdiv. 256
far from being perfect...
cheerz and happy holidays. m
I did not asked anything

I just realized something after seeing the Vray MAX pics that while Tong did a great job with the test, his C4D "grass" is pointed at the top and CUT grass is not. Short, new grass is but we're used to seeing cut grass.
So I'm grabbing the files to play with that idea

Vrayfur is currently not available for c4d, it will in future updates. you can use many replacements as in the first page its much better i guess.
