I make glass differently than most of you. I'm less concerned with perfect realism than an artistic impression. In some applications I pump up the colored effects that this material only hints at. I also take glass towards being a little brighter than reality. This helps it 'feel' right more than look exactly like a photo of a glass object.

When making glass railings for example, you really don't want the glass to be too transparent, you want it to feel a little solid so viewers know something is there at the edge of the balcony. Therefor, you go slightly lighter or darker. I choose lighter, though reality would suggest darker due to less than 100% transmission of light through the glass.

This material is somewhat slow to raytrace. When used as curtainwall vision glass it would be best to exclude glass from GI and turn off shadow casting (though i did end up beating the shadow problem I was having with this material (described in another thread)).

For the box-o-panes image I turned off the text on the scene box because they were distracting as reflections.

The panes files, without the test-scene maps:

Enjoy, suggestions welcome.

From the other thread:
Here is an animated test. I added a few objects to be reflected, a few simple sheets of glass as you would have in a building, etc. plus a figure for scale. This is rendered without GI. Even so, it took a while with all the raytracing going on. To get a sense of how the glass material reacts to various conditions, just scrub the timeline around. It's not much on the animation side.

Thank you Ernest, it looks interesting and I'm anxious to try it in a scene.

Very nice glass, Ernest. In your flick, the refractions in the glass blocks and your closing figure could not be better. Thanks for the share.

Thank you very much Ernest. It looks great! Given that this kind of glass is kind of a signature of yours I'd say that sharing it like this is very generous of you. :)

Cheers,
Stéphane

Thanks for the thanks, everyone, but I would rather hear whether the material is actually helping you out in your work.

There could easily be situations where it becomes a problem rather than a solution, so I'm interested to hear how it performs in real projects.
