Here is my first attempt, I have no idea what I am doing I just tweaked Franz's scene. I am finding it hard to adjust the materials how I would like.
Any pointers on a decent Paint shader?

Thanks for that I will study the shader, looks much better. I have been having problems with RAM though, out of memory. I have a Quad MacPro with 6Gig of RAM. I have had to Hide the wheels on the far side or it will not work.

Thanks again I will try your new shader

Great result!
Try this material, i think that is much better! :)

This is your latest shader it takes the light differently more shadow than the others, thanks

Is necessary to tweak the Fresnell into Diffuse channel: try to reduce the black ribbon or use a light grey gradient! ;) :)

I took it down to 0.35 and adjusted the exposure slightly, much better I think, thanks for your help

I am struggling with transparancy now. How can I make the glass more transparant?

Just check the "affect shadows" parameter in the Refraction layer of the VrayMaterial.
With 5 speculars you should also be able to create a very realistic car paint material.

crap, did you say out of memory for such a simple scene? no way half the things i do will render if that is the case.

I was obviously working to late last nite, I was adjusting the wrong Glass material. I am still having no luck though even on the right material. The shaders look quite complex compared to C4D, I think it will take a bit of time to used to. It would be great if some one posted a set of basic shaders for us to study to get a head start, glass for instance would be a start.
My memory problems were down to building the car in symmetry I made the whole thing editable with the Hypernurb settings very high so the poly count was considerable.

Re the memory issues: what is the poly count in this scene?

I have had to Hide the wheels on the far side or it will not work.
Really? How many polygons have this scene? (ctrl+i)
Will be good also a wire rendering of this last camera :)
Thanks

Sorry I think it was just user error, I have got it to work now without hiding anything. In my haste to get the car finished for a job I had forgoton to reduce the Hypernurb settings for the tyres after swopping them from a simple no tread version to the ones you see. They had more poly's than anything else in the scene.

there are not enough objects in the room that reflect on the car's surface.
try to add some lighting objects to the wall...
something like this for example...

Thanks Chris I did place some black and wite placards around the room but the compositing tags did not work and I did not want them visible in the render. The object was not to get a finished piece of art out of it I have already done with the normal C4D renderer for a printed ad and was happy with it after a whole day of Photoshop work on it. I am just testing the water with shaders and lighting and the camera tag. Nice model you have there!
