Hi,

Just trying to get some different glass materials.
I've looked at some Max tuts on how to get glass, but theirs looks quite different to our layouts...

Can anyone show how to get a decent looking glass texture and how to get it frosted please?

thanks guys

hi will will try to upload some glasses this weekend:-)

for frosted use the glossyness of 0.8-0.85
maynbe for both specual reflection and refraction

I find glass really confusing in VRay as there's no actual transparency slot that I can see, what is the secret? I thought I'd try converting an existing Cinema green glass material but it appears to be solid when converted to VRay.

Also, does VRay not support normal maps in the bump channel?

refraction is trasnparency,
for transparent material deactivate the diffuse.

normal maps will come in next updates as soon we get them from vlado.
at the moment please us normal bump, it is also very nice in vray.

I find glass really confusing in VRay as there's no actual transparency slot

Me too...
..so I made some tests yesterday with an element placed between two other objects (one to test transparency the second fpr reflexions/mirror-effects) and I think it was a good idea to understand the basics of transparency in vray:

First I created a new material with only(!) a refraction-layer.
Here I tested different combinations of refraction-colors and fog-colors and glossiness.
Then added a diffuse layer with high transparency and tested some settings
Then added one and later more specular layers...and finaly the refl. layer

Many things are much more clear now...
At the moment I´ve some problems to understand the reflection-layer. What is the advantage over specular levels as they also generate reflections?!

here are some simple glasses i made fast for you.

these use volume:

feel free to ask, we are here to learn it to You:-)

Good idea Sputnik, I'll try that myself.

Thanks Stefan, those files are a big help.

Thanks a lot Stefan!

Do you recommend one of those for architectural glass, what do you use?

Sorry if this was answered before: Is there any "start up" material library that comes with the plugin?

All the best,

Diego :D

I don't know(because i haven't demo of vfc) that sketchup/vray settings help you to make arch.glass and "ghost"-type
made my own material for architectural thin glass without thickness from clear_glass.

check these settings.

reflection(layer)---reflection(color)--white--M(map)--type--fresnel--fresnel--grey--ior--2.5
diffuse---color--black---trans---grey(amount as you want)
refraction---refraction--white--trans--white

if you want glass doesnt let light pass through,

change refraction---refraction--black--trans--white

try it...and try vrayskp2sidedmtl,too..
*******
oh, i missed one, invisible!

change like this.

reflection---reflection--black--M--type--none
diffuse---color--black---trans---white
refraction---refraction--black--trans--white

h m m m m m...it will be working..
good luck..

for arch glass i sometimes deactivate volume, and set a higher reflectoin ior. and darker/lower refraction color.

also sometimes i use the c4d fresnel instead of the ior in reflections adn refraction.

there is many room to play with:-)

ilays tipps are good also.

i will upload some later too
