Hi
here are some of our works.
hope you like them, and please give some opinions and advices.

kizo

Hello,
once again an entry I made for a rendering contest.this time on www.vizdepot.com
Im pushing my luck but its getting harder and and harder every time

I wanted a cliche image of a tropical resort at sunset time.....not aiming for realism...but rather an eye catching "promotional" piece
This time I experimented with the spherical camera .... inspired by the panoramic photos I was browsing.

near the end I started wasting too much time on details and variations so it was time to stop....tho some things could be further adjusted

as always I hope you find it interesting

Hello, here is my entry to the evermotion competition......I wanted to have a different POV and non standard look but i took the task more like an artistic impression as i wanted to avoid the standard viz.work

it was fun to make ..... no post as stated by the rules

I used my old nick (mia_) as it is my personal work

hope you like it :)

Hi there, this was one of my first visualizations ever made.....now rendered with vray 64-bit.the scene vegetation has cca. 7milion polygons all alpha mapped leafs and 2sided mat.All other mat. are procedurals.
This scene will be available for download, but without the vegetation (copyright issues)

here is my latest project.A small stone house.
Im really happy with this one, and the render speed was fantastic. cca. 30 min. per image at 1920x1080 with various DSP activated.
Thanks to glass.use I have caustics in the top view image, it is a bit blurred but took only 18 min to render. I hope you like it too :)

thanks guys :)

choppir if you mean the cloudy skies, those are photos mapped frontally on a plane with a comp.tag
others are plain vray skies

for the grass stripes I use a color map with stripes, but I haven't managed to adjust DSP so this one is too flat

Hi
the grass is made using the old hair department plug (works only in 9.6)
so its a bunch of 2d polygons with a simple mat.that uses noises and some speculars

as for the exterior scene to be includeed at tools4d, thats not up to me
I can provide the scene if needed

kizo

ohhh please provide it please please please,,
i will pay extra 20$ XD its amazing.. Cristian can u accept his scene please.... he is so generous to provide it so why not :) if yes im certain to buy the exteriors on 1 oct!!!
everybody will agree, its really amazing we really really need it
PLEASE!
or if they cant i will buy it from you with paypal :P

thank you very very much

10-01-2007, 12:02 PM
Thanks for the explanation. :)
I'll can use the hair module for some grasses I think. I did not tried that yet. I think for a field full with grass, I'll need more then the 2gig ram I now have. :)

Peace,
Rich_Art.

Fluffy
10-01-2007, 02:46 PM
You don't really need GIs on the grass blades most of the time, so just make a second pass using the Hair shader in AR, and composite with the final image.

Here is an example of an old project using this method :

fluffy - my opinion is your grass in your scene is scaled too large. when i see the size of the person and such, that is some massive grass. was it losing too much detail at a smaller size?

otherwise great render.

thread renderings - i see no cutaway that people are mentioning... i think the renderings are nice. the first building is a little off to me in materials, but not from a rendering stand point. it's a little jarring with all those colors. but nice otherwise.

grass - again - what grass are people referring to? the stuff in the foreground or the lawn? the lawn looks like a displacement... sorry if i am confused.

the restaurant - you have a oddly shaped bar, where it's not straight. it makes it look like a fisheye effect or something - so i'd be careful of camera angles on that one. nice work.

kizo
12-29-2007, 10:15 PM
I had some problems with the image host, but all fixed now
now you can see all the images again

thanks on your comments sketchbook
you are definitely right about the materials I have to work more on them, but color is so hard to be reproduced exactly the same on all various outputs

regarding the restaurant POV its not only the shape doing the trick, but I used a really wide angle as its a tight place and we had to show all of it

kizo

Thanks haon

my workflow for exteriors is:

IR+LC or IR+BF( if using displacement)
color mapping: reinhard 1 / 0.2 / 2.2 (gamma)
textures with filter/ gamma 0,45
phys. cam + sky & sun
some post work(PS) / mainly levels, curves adjustment

regarding the restaurant POV its not only the shape doing the trick, but I used a really wide angle as its a tight place and we had to show all of it

usually i "remove" a wall and get a POV from the outside. it's a fake POV but works well for smal spaces...

am I right that you interior light setup includes a light in the point of camera?

It looks like that, but it doens't look bad or anything, it's like if you were a photographer you would use fill light, right? i'll try that in my next projects.

kizo
02-26-2008, 09:01 PM
yes I did use additional lights, but not in the point of the camera....
I place area lights on my openings and give them slight color variations

but your point is absolutely true, even in 3d is useful to use some "classic" techniques to achieve a good image

Hey Kizo,

Im admiring your interiors, they are so clear and light. I have been trying to recreate the same crispness and can't quite seem to get it, mine seem just that bit muddy. Do you think you could share your settings? That would be most appreciated but I understand if they're top secret!!

Cheers

03-02-2008, 03:46 PM
Hi rhodesy :) nice to see you

well I'm experimenting every time so various settings are involved and a great amount of post color corrections and other enhancements.

my generat setup is:
IR+LC or IR+BF( if using displacement)
color mapping: reinhard 1 / 0.2 / 2.2 (gamma)
textures with filter/ gamma 0,45
phys. cam + sky & sun

I find this to work nicely, but my problem is that sun+sky+phys.cam alone seem to lack some fine shadows from indirect light(like the ones where the leg of the chair meets the ground)....this is probably because I'm no expert .......
I tried to use "light portals" option.......this looks much better to me but takes to long to render
so my alternative is to place additional area lights on some/all openings or somewhere in the scene....this allows me to tint the lights (slightly) and gain some control over the light distribution all with very fast times and no need for very high settings

I'm aware that this is not the "physically" correct way as Stefan and Strat have pointed out but gives me nice results in decent times even for animation...

hope you find something useful in this observations

kizo

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2783/kizodb8.jpg
here i found 2 test renders, you can see the difference in the shadow/illumination but the only thing changed in the light setup is "light portals" on/off.....with area lights you get something in between

maybe kizo also try the BR+LC method.
and you probably use too bad gi setup, your example without light portal look like you need more detailed lc or ir or both

but set this up by hand not using the presets, this is much more efficient

or send me a file i can also try with you;-)

i do mostly color correction, and levels/curves adjusting, but also add subtle glow
if needed i render a mask for a certain material and use it to adjust the the looks of that material afterwards in PS
I never use raw outputs from any engine

@Stefan......you are right about too low settings in the example image....but I tried a lot of combinations and even with extremely high GI settings this kind of shadow was not present but the times were much longer
It would be nice to see some example of this kind of situation with "correct" setup, done by you or someone else from the team
thanks

Thanks for the tips Kizo. Interesting colour mapping. Is that the same for both inside and out? Im trying out the linear workflow and can't tell much difference yet but need to experiment some more.

Yes that example you have shown with thejust the physical sky is what I have been getting, much less definition on the shadows and light. I will try using area lights instead of portals as well for an experiment.

thanx!!!

I really like the result this time and it was fast to render too (ok I have a new rig but still it is very fast)

unfortunately I still cant use vray for everyday production as the kind of work we do (mostly stone houses) requires a lot of details and polygons
this one was on the limit , crashing quite often
....so cant wait to get the 64 bit version....and start using vray more and more

Hi eddie

my vegetation is made using ONYX , and i didn't wary about poly count too much as the 64 bit version + lot of ram .....so all is 3d

kizo

I have another question pls
last time u mentiones becuase u use a lot displacement...so u use the IR+BF (instead of IR+LC).
so, if my setting now is good for exterior but I am using IR+LC and would like to change it to IR+BF (many dis) Do I only change to Bf in the secondary bounces? that all? oh shuld I change more things?

kizo
05-07-2008, 09:45 PM
you shouldn't have any problems switching to BF, and you dont have to change anything else (there might be a slight difference in output)

if u are having ram issues I recommend to use the technique that STRAT explaind here: http://forum.vrayforc4d.com/viewtopic.php?t=1701

using 1/2 output size without AA for precalculating IR and LC helps a lot

jenzy
05-19-2008, 08:53 PM
very realistic renderings !!

some points:
-why do you use tiles for the roofground without usability as a roof terrace? who will pay for this? perhaps you try something like this:

http://images.google.de/images?client=opera&rls=de&q=extensive%20dachbegr%C3%BCnung&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&lr=lang_de&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi

- dont like the colored chairs on the terrace, would make them also in the style of the house, the vegtation is enough colored contrast in the scene

- the glass-balustrade is i.m.o too milky

but no doubt, great renders !!!

btw.: your website fuxxx on opera, ie and mozilla !!![/url]

kizo
05-19-2008, 09:29 PM
hi jenzy, thanks for taking the time to give me your opinion, much appreciated :)

- the roof ground is as the architects specified(so my intervention is out of question)

the furniture was picked up from my previous projects, so I haven't given much thought.....now when u mention it, I could have done better

as for the glass balustrade, I'm very pleased with the outcome !!! so matter of taste i guess ;)

Hi. I updated on 1st page with a recently finished project.
As this is more like a concept there were no details to show.

All images are rendered at 2560x1440px using presaved half size maps (IR+LC)
render times were from 20 to 55 min. ( LC 2-3 min, IM 3-5min)
no proxy were used, so all trees are polygons + alpha mapped ( we used the great VB collection)
the scene poly count was from 5 up to 20 million and vray crunched it without any problems and really fast! :D

we used the latest 64bit beta.....the new release is gonna rock!!!!

cheers

I like the sea..the trees..the buildings....actually I like everything !!!

how did u do the shore line ?

ps1: why it si not in ur site ?
ps2: did u do the last 2 works (Alpska +HB Villa) in Fryrender? or vrayforc4d?

kizo
08-31-2008, 07:39 PM
thank you ichi.one and eddie :)

the aberration is made in PS ( but its too strong when I look at it now)
also as always I did some color correction.

eddie Im glad you like it, but being this a fast one there are a lot of errors and things I don't like. So plese give me some critic comments, it wold be nice to hear what stands out (bad or good) the most in other peoples eyes

I will upload the sea / shore line so you can see, but im not very happy with it.
I had to work on it in PS afterwards as the line where the sea touches the sand was very sharp and almost black.

it is not on our site jet cos I haven't uploaded it, but I will....

Alpska and HB Villa are rendered with Fry, but its a compliment if its not that obvious to you :)

new update on 1st page "Hotel Amarin"

another extremely tight deadline job so a lot could be better..All made in 4 days.We got some "models" from the architects, but heavy editing was needed.fortunately we had the terrain and surroundings from some previous projects and VRAY to help us finish on time.

we made intensive use of vray proxies (all the plants and furniture) all painted with Paint On Surface plugin.

any C&C is welcome, thanks

kizo
09-12-2008, 09:54 AM
hey choppir, we got the models but thy were in really bad shape as this is a proposal concept, not a finished project. so a lot of tweaking and adjusting was needed.
and we do it as a team (4 of us worked on it) we couldn't do it otherwise

thx BerTiN03 its definitly a great chance and we try to do our best in testing, using new features and producing (I hope) nice results with them showing the possible usage

kizo

again only team work pulls this kind of job in such a short time.
but its very hard, for this one we set our record, 34 hours with no sleep

so you can imagine we do it only for a very good motivation(price:)) and to gain some major jobs and references.

still its a sacrifice we don't intend to do constantly

Hi, simply amazing work.

My questions are, where can you get trained to do great stuff like this and how do you get that gradual transparency with the beach water?

Again, I am blown away by your fantastic work and I am extremely interested in this area of 3D.

Thanks.

kizo
09-18-2008, 10:12 AM
Hi, we are glad you like it people :)

haon we use the VB collection (mostly for exteriors) and Onyx generated plants

cg4life for the beach water I used a water surface with some volume and a procedurally textured sea bottom (with gradients)......I will upload it so you can see.....
as for the training, you can come to our studio to get trained :)

...here is the file, it was rendered using LWF so the gamma 0,454 is applied to the diffuse

http://www.3darscom.com/kizo/beach_kizo.c4d

also remember I did some post work in PS to eliminate a visible black line where the water intersects with the beach

thx InTheCity

Stefan is right, in that scene we didn't use proyx, as I wanted to test how it will go with a huge amount of polygons and alpha mapped trees.

vray did it with no problem and amazing fast! even in some takes where the poly count was cca. 20 million !

keep in mind I tested this using the 64 bit beta version.

Wow, amazing news !

Is this due to C4D 64 bits too ? I thought C4D 32 was not able to support more than about 10 millions polys ?

Very great and can let's hope amazing possibilities !

Thanks for the infos Kizo !

Hi KIZO;

perfect made pictures. Well it would be great, to give us/me some explanaition to your settings.

How did made the fantastic gras on your last update (17.10), was it done in postwork? I´ve never seen so realistic grass in Vray. Please give me tip to get such a gras.(Picture 1 and 2 on your Portfolio) And what about the trees, all done in Vray, i cant believe........

Well i had to stop this now, because I had a lot to learn.....

Huebbes, I think it's some edited Hair, or fast and fur for the grass. It looks amazing, that's clear.

Just, is it jpg compression or too much post-effects like lens distortion, but it's not as good as usual.

Otherwise, always wonderful job !

I have one question, could you share the secret of your 3D hedges... how are you creating these, are they constructed from premade blocks or are you 'growing' them to fit your models?

kizo

im glad you like it Rizon :)

also thank you dusteh

we make hedges with onyx, than trim them inside c4d to form a cube so we can use 1 model 4 times in a row without any noticeable tiling...... with a few original models we make rows to form a hedge.....works quite nice

Hi kizo,

I will now only look 1 times a week at your site, because it get frustated so such great stuff-thats getting frustated to me.

But i think we`ve got a lot to learn. Can you tell us something about your postwork, perhaps a post of your newest pic without postwork - to see what is able to do n vray (without pw). And how big is that scene and how many polys.

Did you make all in c4d or the housemodelling in an CAD-Software (which?)

Well thats it.

Thanks.

hi again Kizo

I know u ask sometimes for critics so here is a small one......

most of ur veg is really nice and realistic but I think (& know) that u can do a better vine veg onto pergolas...it looks too flat to me.

is it ivy? (cause u had better do it with onyx to give it some variations in leaves planes)

another question....I guesss u use the 2-sided mat for leaves (cuase in other vray it is impossible to get such leaves texture) ...right? can "normal" users can get also beta versions?

kizo
11-01-2008, 01:27 AM
hi eddie
u r right about the vine veg. its made with ivy.....and rather flat
i tried with onyx but cant find a way

as for betas and such Im not the one to ask, but Stefan
anyway there is a rumor on the forum that 1.1 is soon to be released
so no problems :)

eddie
11-01-2008, 11:09 PM
Hi Kizo

thanx for replying

just curious...are ur clients like all that "unusual camera view" and stuff like the cracks on the road and such? or they are images for fun?

kizo
11-03-2008, 12:20 PM
we tend to provide standard visuals for our clients, the framing is usually the same but once all is covered we make some different shots

as for cracks and such we had some requests to remove the "garbage" but after a short explanation they got our point.....we take care to not over do with these kind of effects.....it wold be nice to "ruin" a bit more those perfect surfaces but it would be too much

since we have no time for personal projects we try to push the jobs a bit further every time, sometimes it works others not :)

kizo

eddie
11-03-2008, 10:21 PM
nice approach and glad it works to apply ur touches in design.

I was trying to solve the vine problem ...did u try to low the gravity down thus the leaves will look dropped down and it might be better?

nothing similar in onyx?

kizo
11-14-2008, 11:13 AM
Hi Antimatter, haon and don_tomaso .... thanks for the support :)

I have no fixed formula for post processing the images. It all depends on how i did the render and what Id like to achieve, but I can explain some common procedure.

usually I do post in PS, using different options to enhance contrast, colors and exposure.

So adding adjustment layers like "curves" (set to the "S" curve)

adding another adjustment layer "color balance" (here i set colors of shadows, highlights to contrasted tones. ex. shadows more blue and highlights more yellow/red)

adjust the "exposure" and also the the offset (-) to get more concentrated dark areas

sometimes I create an overexposed layer and blend it with the normal one in screen mode but faded until I like the result

as I like the "lens distortion" and especially color aberration usually I set some also (+6 -6 size 101).....but this blurs the image so a bit of "smart sharpen" to reduce the blur

for my pleasure I add curves layer adjusted separately (r,G,B) to get a film like cross processing look, but usually I don't stick to the standard values....
this step is very tricky for me, It looks nice on screen, but hard to predict the looks when printed.....so I give customers the images without it most the time

beside the PS I use also Irfan for quick adjustments (brightness, contrast, gamma)

also other simple things like subtle glows, or parts cut and adjusted separately to better fit the image

as you can see a lot of experimenting is involved, and very often what i achieve doesn't look right to me the next day :)
but that makes it more fun and I enjoy this very much

here are some examples of before and after:

Kizo, great works... you and your team are very skillful.

2 questions about your bird's eyes views:

1 - the roads are always amazing seen from the top and i wonder if you export an UVW map and then work a road texture by photoshop to make the darker lines made by car tyres and other type of dirt.

2 - the grass looks 100% real seen from the top and i wonder if you use Hair Dept plugin to make a rectangle of grass and then by vray proxy you replicate this one on all your ground area.

Thanks for reading,

sam

kizo
03-23-2009, 12:48 PM
Hi KevinJ and sambrn

we usually make textures for each road , so you are right.....for junctions and such we export the outlined UVW to PS and paint there.
for all other parts we have premade textures
sometimes we paint the whole terrain.....and others we just make a polygon line that covers the intersection of the road and terrain ( we do it using PaintOnSurface/draw polygon )

for all distant shots we use only textures , no real grass

I hope this gives you an idea, if you have other questions just ask

FWIW

kizo, you may not be receiving critiques but these are difficult and quiet days around the world and people are struggling or are focusing on the work they have and scratching around for new work. All of the forums I visit daily are much, much less active these days.

Arscom's work is frankly intimidating, IMHO, because the renderings exhibit sophisticated technical skills with all of the tools and are (amazingly) rich and orchestrated compositions. Arscom has achieved a level of quality deserving of the label "masterful". You guys post so many stunning pieces and each is rich in detail, it takes a long time to take in all of what you have posted.

Arscom does not make many mistakes. When there appears there is a mistake, it sometimes looks to be due to a sw limitation and not an actual mistake. Unless there are obvious mistakes, who dares to criticize? You get praise and kind words or "how to" questions and that is understandable.

Anyway, I am impressed with Arscom's work and have shown your renderings to my wife, an architect, and my son (12yo) and hope to share new Arscom pieces with them.

Leonard

p.s., the right end pic is Fry?

kizo
04-01-2009, 04:50 PM
Hi Leonard,

Id like to thank you !!! It is worth a lot to me.
I understand your point and have to say that I myself and my studio are experiencing a very bad period and things seem to be getting only worst.

My complaint is also a consequence of the situation (stress)....and even out of place .
As you can see we tend to give what we can in almost every job, regardless of the project type or even price and now faced with a substantial work loss the only gratification that remains are the critics or comments we receive.

as you know there is always room for improvement and a fresh pair of eyes spots the problems much more easily, but unfortunately not giving critics is a common behavior an all forums I frequently visit........and I admit that I'm no exception though I try

your comment made my / our day a much better one , and once again I thank you for that

kizo

Hi Kizo, great work

can you expand a bit on your candles? are the flames with the nice glows a vr material or is it all post work?

(sorry if this has already been mentioned)

sambrn
04-02-2009, 11:39 AM
Hi kizo,

i like very much the two interiors you uploaded on 25.03.09
If i'm not wrong you used hdri for illumination... well i always set standard sky and sun for interiors whatever software and render engine i was using but this solution looks much better about what concerns illumination... much more natural and rich.

I just wonder if you put some area lights on the windows...
I usually put some are lights on each windows and set very low intensity. The purpose is not adding illumination but just reinforce some shadows which sometimes don't stand out clearly.

Do you use hdri as a light dome or as environment?

Thanks,

Sam

kizo
04-02-2009, 12:13 PM
nice suggestion Karl :) i must try that
but I still insist that every piece has points that can be fine tuned and adjusted.....I can spot many of them and almost never Im totally happy with how things turn out

for candles I used a plane with a mapped flame (hdri for color + alpha) but the glow was added in post..........there is also a small sphere area light
Im glad you like it STRAT

you are right Sambrn , those are lit by HDRI in spherical dome area light.
I generated the hdris with maxwell.......and didnt use any other lights ..... but usually I also put some additional area lights on openings and give them slight color.
you could try also using light portals as they give a much better shadow definition, or using BF+LC combination with high subd......the times are higher but shadow and light definition is excellent

Thanks kizo for your advice about interior illumination by Hdri.

There is a question about your works in general.
I notice you never use people in your render. Personally i only like people images put on a plane with alpha channel on but i use them only when the images suit well with the illumination of my scene and when they are far away from the camera. Generally speaking i don't like much putting people images since they can make your render looks unreal. I know other guys who use 3d low poly people models with a simple grey shader but of course this solution looks great only on unphotorealistic renders.

The problem is that the most of my clients ask for people in the views. Don't your clients do the same? How do you face the problem?

Just curious.

Hi Sam, sorry for the late reply.....for now we manage to avoid adding people.
Mostly because of the nature of our works and cos we insist on not using them.
If we were able to make a good integration we would most probably use them but it turned into our routine to make viz without people.

cchren thank you, glad you like it!

man that competition rendering is by far the best i've seen so far - think you might be in with a chance there Kizo, it's going to take something special to beat it!

GREAT! i also think this is the best image in the competition; light and materials are spot on, although i'm not a big fan of the fisheye camera in general
this should be the winner

for me no probleme the last image is very good

But i dislike your barel distortion (lens optique)

i think without distortion your image is better

I think the distortion is a nice touch! Personal choice who knows which way the judges will swing?!

Hi, you are way to kind guys :) I think this has no chance ..... as you can see how in detail others managed their entries, and also the quality they achieved

I stand strongly behind my choice about the distorted fish eye cam.......if you look in my thread there were tests without it, but they just dont look right

I used some extreme cam angle like 8 or smthing and without the fish eye cam I cudnt have this composition, and the composition and POV were my main interests

How did you get that ''Fisheye lens''?

Good work mate. :D

hey ty choppir !

I used the "Lens distortion" parameter in the phys. cam ..... but it can be also achieved by using controls in render settings/VrayBridge/Vray Camera
by choosing Fish eye cam and setting the Vray FOV and curve
