i'm having a hard time trying to get it to work. i'd like to have a sky object with a hdri image in luminance channel light the enviroment. but even the sky renders black, and thus - nothing gets illuminated. what am i doing wrong? maybe someone can provide a simple example of such a situation. i've tried all sorts of GI settings, very high illumination values etc.

with AR, it was very simple - create a sky object, slap a luminous material on it, enable GI - and it lights up the enviroment.

yeah, i'm wondering myself Mihkeltt

i don't know if vray has got it's own system and if vray is compattible with C4D skies..

make a big sphere or a dome

invert the normals

make a texture with the hdri in lumiance, use the multiplier to set intensity
like 5 most times for normal use and 20-100 for physical camera.

put it on

render.

maybe adjust intensity in lumiance multiplier.

hint, you can even mix a hdri with physical sky!!
make also a sun and activate physky. as the hdri will be semitransparent the sky wiill show trough. use a comositing tag on the hdri dome to make it not cast shadows.--looks very cool!

again i will setup such a file for starting. i am just having crazy work with sending out sales now.

You can also use the environment background color for this, that can be found in the render options.
It creates an infinite sky dome much like the Sky object, with the exception that it can't be oriented as intuitively.

yes, i found that. but, is it possible to make the hdri background invisible for the kamera?

unfortunately no.

i forgot:

also you can use an area light set it to dome and load the hdri there.
this gives excellent results too!

thanks a bunch guys :)

the big sphere with inverted normals worked wonders :). i wonder why the sky object doesn't work? is it cause it's infinately large?

You can also use a Light Dome area and add an hdri in his texture parameter. This way you have an hdri environment and if you set the area light invisibility you can hide the background to the camera.
