Nothing to shout about, just wanted to setup a basic scene with a few elements I can experiment with - can't beat the classic mirrorball! ;D

So - I am using IR+LC - what settings should I tweak to get rid of the blothiness on the ceiling, and to improve AA quality?

I have to say I am very impressed with the GI quality and the use of the phyical sun and sky - brilliant! :)

Cheers

Pretty cool test scene :)
The blotches can be reduced by increasing the interpolated samples.
This will make you lose a bit of detail detection, so you'll need to increase your hemispheric subdivisions, and, if not enough, your sample rates.

You can also reduce the AA problems with high contrast areas by enabling "subpixel mapping" in the color mapping tab.

Thanks Fluffy,

That was very useful! - I tried upping the IR Interpolated Samples from 20 to 40 - that pretty much gave a perfectly smooth render, and took only 2 seconds longer! - but as you said, it reduced detail in some areas - the stairs particularly. I then upped the hemispheric subd to 100 from 50, that brought most of the detail back, but at a greater time hit - 4m. 10s - still not bad though! :)

I ended up settling for 75 hems SubD and 30 in the Interp. Samples, and then also activated the subpixel mapping, giving me more smoothing in the harsh highlight areas, and that came in at only 2m.45s.

Nice ;)

Nothing more to say, looks great!

A fina play with this scene - added some water, changed the AA to the DMC method, with 1Min 16Max @ 2400 pixel width, and still came in at only 16mins, which for the quality is amazing, and the AA looks superb.

The water really adds to the scene! This is an excellent render, in very short order.

nice work mate..

how did you make the water surface.. can you tell us or share the material please

Cheers guys,

The water is simply a refractive material with the usual 1.333 IOR. I added a displacement tag to the object, and used the standard Wavey Turbulence procedural noise shader with displacement height set at 2cm - that's it!

Thanks for this info :-)
the wavey turbolence works good.
maybe i can share my testing-scene :)

A real beauty Kromekat...
LoL, an other question for you. Where does your Nickname come from?
Here in the Netherlands it means something like a curved poesycat. LoL...

Peace,
Rich_Art.

choppir - the large expanse of light on the left is a hole, and the Physical Sky and Sunlight is visible.

I once created an airbrush painting of a robot cat at college, and when I first went online several years later, I needed a nickname! - on my wall was a print of that airbrushed, metal robotic cat, and I came up with krome (chrome) kat - thereafter, I just kept it that way for everything! :D

Interesting about the translation in the Netherlands - I had no idea! :D - I am not surprised that it is the same in Afrikaans though choppir, afterall aren't their origins Dutch anyway?

Adam :)

Haha Thanks for the explanation kromekat.
Yeah indeed, our Dutch ancestors where not that kind people..

Peace,
Rich_Art.

Hi Kromkat!

I was actually talking about the 3 'stripes' in the wall on the left. Is that a light or did you just made it as an illuminating object?

Yeah, some South-African's(Afrikaner's) are from the Dutch originally...

Ah sorry! - yes, they are just self illuminated cuboids.

ok, cool, just wondered if it could be long vertical vray lights...
