A metaball with a scale of 0.1 should give you a nice effect.
Although it might take some time to compute.
Nice attempt though.

Fun! Honey, or amber, is such a pleasing color.
The way you crank these posts out, you must have tons of money and nothing else to do.
I like it so, keep doing it.

Ha, not really. All side products of other activities... Why not make a test render a bit more tongue in cheek... Besides that... not enough money and just lost 4 large jobs because of the economy 8(((. All products which will not be launched right now as planned. Sighhhh. I accept jobs! Something I have not had to say for the past three years 8(.

Li'll update...

I know... the specular is hideous... No idea why the material renders very nicely at ht e fringes and then toward the center it looks like a cartoon shader.... I have to sleep over that...

My guess would be that:
- the surface is a bit to uniform -> maybe put a subtle smooth noice in the bump of your honey-mat
-the honey intersects with the floor -> no internal reflection -> tweak the floor a bit so it is beneath the bottom honey surface

Nope, it does not intersect. Even the insect is in it's own little bubble. After a certain thickness the material simply stops 'working' like it does on the fringes. I have to visit that again as I am now stuck with a glas object acting the same. There must be something within the settings....
I'll try to 'mess up' the surface as well so I can see that effect.

as far as i can see the reflection looks like it gets clamped from the outside broders inwards, are you using a frsenel shader with very abrupt changes? either that or an IOR issue would be my best guess
