Similar problem here, using glass blocks that divide 2 rooms. They either render black or blown out. So far I've tried a light portal, IES lights and an omni. Tried adjusting reflection and turning off the back faces, and turning on and off volume.

What worked for me was to turn on "Affect Shadows" in the "Refraction Layer"

Also light doesn't pass through glass in an accurate manner. So, you have to either add a Light Portal, or an area light (when they work) to fake the additional light within a room.

in vray yoiu seldom need a light portal, but they do exist.
in glass dont forget to activate volume, if you want it very transparent make sure to set its volume lightness to 100%
also activate affect shadow
cheers
