or use hair.
i often do that if the surface is not endless big.
maxon hair does make good grass in vray.-)

i'm more than happy with vray displace grass these days. i've long ago nailed fine still rendering or animation rendering with it. it's very fast and we're more than happy with it.

yes the displace is also very nice, you are right.-)
i juts wanted to point out an option
the hair grass is better where you need longer grass. the displaced grass is better for short grass

Hey Strat,
The grass you are using in the animation is the best displacement grass I have ever seen in VrayforC4D! The level of quality is almost as good as the one on the Evermotion forum.
Is there a chance you can teach us how to do it? Do you have to subdivide a lot? My problem with Vray grass is that subdividing is really tricky, I got funny patterns on the grass and you have to subdivide a lot.

thanks guys.
the trick is the mapping of the grass. Kizo tought me the best method is the UV map. this minimizes funny patterns. then you just need optimised displaced settings :)
this rendered sooo fast. it's pre-caching the lightcache solution that takes the time.
I'll post up a mini tut soon. Infact, we're soon re-launching our website big time (complete re-write), which will have a regular updated c4dvray blog, which will include mini-tuts and freebees.
so stay tuned.

Thanks so much Srat. I visited the new tutorial section in VRAYC4D.com. You got a great compilation there.

an old trick is to render the gi and lighchache without displacement, and use this chached GI for the final image with displacement, this works very fine for grass and gives some extra speed:-)
also remind for outdoors you can set the lightchache really low like 1/4 or less often.( or a fixed rate of 500-1000)
cheers

Hi Strat!
Thanks mate. Would be awesome!!!
thanks guys.

As far a i know you put all displacement off with LC and IR. Then only for the final render you put it on and it works brilliant, so it makes the pre-calc very very fast.
But maybe with your method you need it..? not sure

not advisable
switching displace off for the pre-cache gives uber fast (or normal) speed pre-cache, but you dont get any gi on your displace grass. the grass renders flat and lifeless.
displace is a proper 3d process, not like bump, so must be treated as such. the gi solution needs to be generated with displace on to get the proper effect. the displace settings we use make this more than possible on a single pc without the need for renderfarms.

STRAT, is Kizo's method the same as this? http://vrayc4d.com/files/178_grass-displacement-01-11.html
If not, I am about to do some grass and sure would like to try the method you use. It looks good and a like the August/September grass here.

i dont know what this and Kizo's settings are. i just tweaked mine to suit. i do know the best mapping method (irrespective of displacement properties) is to map your grass to your object using UVW co-ordinates and not FLAT or CUBIC mapping.

why not using cubing mapping ? Displacement works only in UV space ?

displace does work with cubic, but can give dodgy looking artefacts on the final displace. it can give a noticeable tiling effect. UV minimises this a lot more.
