View Full Version : Any word on vray native AO?

Just wondering if this is something we can expect in the nearish future or if there aren't any plans to incorporate this (in the SDK or bridge)? I use the vray physical camera all the time and find it much easier to adjust so it would be great to have the flexibility of using AO with it - I know its not physically correct but i think it still has a place.
Cheers for any info on this...........

hello all,
why don't you make an AO separate Pass with Vray ?

i don't understand this can you explain this a bit ?
do you mean the C4D-AOshader in all the vraytextures & render this with vray ?
the combination vray & the AO shader is very slow
it's much faster just to go back to c4d AR & render a AO pass
but that doesn't fit the vrayphysical cam.

sorry, here a little workaround:
Render your image with phy cam, vray and no AO
copy Scene (or if use TakeTool create new Take ;) )
create new material
in new material turn on diffuse with white color and luminosity with Cinema AO SHADER, turn on dobbleside in luminosity layer ( if you have flipped normal this can fix some problem). put this new material in Override Material.
go tu vray settings and turn off GI, set colormapping linear 1,1,1
go to PhyCam and turn off vignetting, turn off exposure, and set 255,255,255 on white balace.
then render your fast AO pass and mutiply on your render.
if you use phy cam this is only system to have same shot.

very interesting, gonna give it a try

works, dunno how fast it is compared to the c4dAOpass
but this one works with the phy cam & even with DOF
which is nice,... waiting right now for the AO vrayrender
to check if it fits in photoshop

Where do I find the Cunema AO shader ? Do I need to have AR for that ?

hello 3dkobi,
yes AR is neaded for AO, preaps you can serch Ambiente plugin (http://www.bobtronic.de) , is free but i don't know if it work on r11.

what Franz78 said works very good
even with vrayDOF
the only thing you have to make sure
is no 'alpha' materials : something like a logo (as texture alpha)
on a wall, you have to delete the logo to get the wall AO
otherwise the wall is transparant with a square for a the logo
But that's a minor detail, good tip Franz78, thx !

Great!! Sorry I've been away for a few days. It works a treat although i ran into some triangulation problems in objects that weren't triangulated but this is fixed by manually triangulating objects. The only trouble now is that is is a bit slow - especially when you need to render the original normally as well. But at least it is possible for now. Would love there to be a way of optimising this.

Actually if you drop the AO accuracy right down to about 10% it speeds things up quite a bit and vray still makes it look smooth! might try going even lower! So could be a useful workaround for the time being. Thanks Franz
FIXED...Had to turn my lights off!!! Doh! Again!
>>>>>>>
I've been looking at this method and can't seem to get it to work on my machine. I just get plain black and white. Could anyone spare a simple file with the AO setup?
Please.
TIA

here you go a simple AOscene with vray cam dof etc....
just to show how it's done : http://bmd3d.com/temp/sceneAO.c4d.zip
the technique Franz78 shows works very good
for me there's no need for the vraydirtshader any more
because this way i have much more control over the AO
because i can control it in postprod. even give more contrast, color etc...
works with all the vraycam things even with the lights !
used it on my carpark project
check the CCTV camera rendering used AO 20%
with the sunlight from vray so there's only AO in the shadows
Many thanks Ichi!
I've more or less got it working now but I have had to do some mesh surgery (triangulating etc) in order to sort out some artefacts. But now rendering out an AO that corresponds with the phycam. And it's nice and fast too!!!
I just feel lost without phycam particularly for adjusting lighting so going down the AR AO route isn't one I really want to follow.
Cheers
Adri
