View Full Version : How to do a flokati carpet using vray?
Hello
I got a problem. I want to do a flocati but since vray isn't directly compatible with hair this seems to be realy hart stuff to me. Sure i could render it out with AR and compose it in post but i got a chair standing on that flokati and I don't know how to do it this way.
Heres a example of what I'm talking about.

P.S. If thats the wrong forum I am realy sorry.
vray directly compatible with hair. and you can make this carpet on 5 minutes.
Grass ;-) by Fluffy, a little bit of imagination and you can make carpet

Oh man thanks. Seems that I missed that totaly.
after making place carpet c4d and image here, maybe you will need some tweak.

i guess its easier to make it with displacement, i think! because i did put a fur before and it was good with 2cm
Ok that seems to work sofar. But cinema crashes when I add the poligonal hair shader. Seems not to be an issue of RAM. Perhaps one got a idea how to fix that.

Did you update Vray? support for the polygonal Hair shader came with 1.03.
Otherwise, for your example here, I would advise using AR and the 2D Hair render, as you need an insane amount of hair to get even close to that effect.
Keep in mind that AA will also be a killer for polygonal hair, as you will need very fine details to avoid jagged edges or altogether missed hair.
Compositing is cake, and if you need to have a chair on it, just output the GI and shadow passes of Vray, and play with them on top of the AR hair pass.
Otherwise, this could be achieved with polygonal hair, even with a regular material, the only limitation being the number of polygons your machine can handle and how well you set the hair style up.
Yes I updated vray to 1.05. No it works. Seems that a simple restart solved that problem.
I think I will try it with AR and post. It renders really slow using the other method.

or simply use c4d hair modul to create your own, it's really simple

..thanks loads mor4us. ...and ill try n do that.

i tried using displacement and tweaking the mappin parameters but i cant seem to get the lenght/curl similar to the one in the test rug. i used a plane object-17x25, vray displacement with mappin parameters-
noise---1%global scale
amount-10%
max.subdivisions-1024
but it seemed too stiff and solid. how can i get it to soften, add and curl more. ..kind of like the one in the test rug,..but shorter length. thanks

@tong ..how do i manipulate the strands of the hairs? i.e reduce thier lenght, curl etc

If it is possible to do these soft curls with a displacement-shader I have heavily underestimated displacement?

so, do you mean it cant be gotten with diplacement... ...... ..kindly let me know.

From what I know: A displacement-map is a greyscale image which is used to transform the geometry which it is mapped upon. Lighter pixels mean that the vertexes are moved farther away from the original geometry, darker less, black means they stay in place. So, let's say you have for a carpet a noise pattern created, either in an image editing software or a noise-shader, you get some spiky affair with the former lighter/white pixels moving the geometry upwards. From this it's clear that you can't move the "strands" sideways, so there is no possibilty for bends or curls.

thanks!, .didnt fully understand displacement. ......very helpful.

I played around a bit with Vray-fur a bit, but it seems I haven't fully got it yet. Fine hair, but not really soft and plushy, more like an electrocuted cat. There seems to be a lot possible with maps. If you want to try you may start from here:
