View Full Version : Using saved Irr. Map
Hi,
I just had a look at this tutorial:http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R1/tutorials_imap1.htm
and i wonder, if it is possible to use a saved Irr. Map that was renderd with an small imagesize (maybe 800x600) for the same (still) rendering with a much bigger size? maybe 2400x1800 ?
i think i read something like that but im not sure...
so the aim is to make the Irr. Map with an small render size with an short rendertime, and use this for the big size rendering to avoid the new calculation of the Map.
i hope you understand what i mean....
(sometimes its hard to discuss in a foreign language :?
he he,
Why you so smart, and why Vlado so stupid ;-)
you can, but there will be artifacts, since you never can make something big from something small, and don`t have problems.
basicly depends of the scene.
ok.. you're right!
but.. i can make a Irr Map. to lower the rendertime, and when i change something in geometry or add a element, i just modify the map with the "incremental add to current map" function? am i right with that?
it seems, that this way to work is realy cool!
:D
yes, you can, it`s will save your`s time, and you can make Irrmap for entire scene and make Cinema4D Batch Render to all images that you want.
so it`s great, ;-)
thats realy COOL!
thanks tong for affirmation!

I am not sure Tong's answer agrees with Stefan's answer here: http://www.forum.vrayforc4d.com/viewtopic.php?p=3051#3051. I think Stefan is saying that yes you can use this method but there are serious limits as to what and how much can be changed.

no it is very much possible, actually it is a usual workflow.
i render my images always with detailed GI(-3/0) in small size like 800x400. save the map
and then i use the map for a rendering of 5000x2500.
the irradianve map in vray is extremly flexible! a great time saver.
cheers
stefan
p.s. there are only limits in changing after saved GI the light(of course), thats what i said....it works too but doesn make sense as you want to light macthing the gi.

p.s also for animation i do this. i render small size gi and render the final animation in 1920x1080/hd...works perfect:-)
cheers
stefan
if it so, it`s great, in max i have some problems.

it's my dayly workflow
first rendering a 640x480 up to 1200*900px prepass saving Irradiance map and Lightcache to a file and then render up to 6000px from file
this works perfect you need to set up the settings a little bit higher than for a 640x480 pict
so IR min-3 max-1 to 1 so the more passes the better but -5 ti -1 is faster than -2 to 1 and has more passes
and LC 600 to 800 by screen 0,08

I have to try this. Sounds good but.....

but?
actually it is even better to use a detailed gi map at small size than to render a fullsize gi map at lower detail.
imade many many works this way. it works 100%
for highest image quality use a ir map of -3/0, render this at small size(with auto save)
then you can use this map to render any size in vray for the final image:-)

The "but" means I am embarrassed to admit feeling a little lost - *but not drowning*! Lots of info flying around and not enough free time to experiment.
weekend - childrens time!
no time for experiments, just kidding around with my daughter.. ;-)
thats a BIG Experiment too!

Does the saved map only work from one viewpoint or from multiple view points of the same scene?

I found the answer in another thread thanks anyway

that depends if you have saved it for multiple views ar just for one.
you can make an irmap that works for more than one view.(add to current map)
this you also can work for more than one view:-)
if the IRmap covers the parts you render you can use all views that are covered by the map.
cheers
