Hey guys,
I'm just new here and I hope my question is not stupid at all...
When using IES lights I have only the possibility to work with vray omni lights, right?
If I have a spotlight directed to a wall, aligning the omni to a spline would be enough to give the effect?
Hope you understand my question!

hi, the ies needs an oni as base yes, but it is not like an omni of course.
the blu axis i the direction where the ies light goes(z axis in c4d)
was that your question?
cheers

as Stefan said the ies only with omni and the blue arrow "z",x,y need to be
directed down. if you need screenshot i will make it although its very easy
anyway your main question is not obvious as Stefan said please explain more

Hi thiagoguima,
all the information about shape, power etc., are readed from the IES file.
As Stefan correctly said all you can do is change the pointing direction of the light using its Z axis.
Cheers

I thought i was changing the power OK with the multiplier? Seemed to work but i think maxed out at 3000% probably shouldn't be doing that though!

Or are you using an ies file from a 10W Halogen luminaire?

 no all in cm. I think ak-vision might be closer to the mark - I was just trying it out for the first time and downloaded the 1000and1 files from the links that have been posted in the resources bit and selected different ones at random - I find it real hard to work out what many of them are as they just seem to be manufacturers codes. Would be nice to find a place that listed them in a comprehensive and visual catalogue. I'll try picking some different ones. I just thought your might have to crank up the power like you have to do with the sun etc. when using a physical camera that was all.

You can open the ies files with a normal editor. Normally you find there in the text which lamp is used in the luminaire.

Great tutorial and ivery nformative about IES lights. Just wondering what we do with IES plugin for MAX ? That is not a Cinema 4D plugin?

Hi glass.use,
I download your file - thanks - opened it as is and rendered. Black. I finally got a weak glow (no scallop effect) on the wall after stepping the fstop down to 1.2, the speed to 1/30sec and changing the ISO to 400. My units are cm and I did not touch the light or the GI settings.
Any ideas why I am not getting an image like yours?
Specs:
MacBook Pro, 2.16GHz, 2GB, Mac OS 10.4.10
Cinema 4D v10.111
VrayForC4D 1.05

I know lighting companies use some sort of logic for the naming of IES files, but I haven't figured it out yet. It would be soooo much easier if you could find the light you want, and the corresponding IES file was listed in the details. GE was pretty good, but didn't have many available compared to the number of lights they make.

sweet viewer will do nicely - just to pick several and store them somewhere as favourites im sure we only need a handful :D

it`s freeware standalone software, it`s not a plugin.

3dOP Pro reads Type C IES files because they are the most common for outdoor fixtures.
Windows

OSX
http://www.3dop.com/downloads/3dOPPro_205_Install.zip
for MAC and PC, i think you can even compare light, or even see ;-)

Make sure you re-assign the ies file again in the light tag because i think it doesn't save in the project
the camera settings
f-number 5.5
shutter 45
iso 200
everything is working great i re download it and check its working.
can anyone else see if they have a similar problem.
and re check if its cm your unit
thanks

It opens with your IES file path. With my path it works just fine. Thanks

cool, thank you...
now the real challenge is to design a luminaire that creates one of my selfmade ies files in reality... :D
