two shots from a hangar scene. It´ll be an animation with camera and object movement, Zygote man is just there for "size-clue"

Wow, totally unusual (but great) Walli style. No plants anywhere ;-)
Looks a bit noisy, what GI settings did you use?

actually I didn´t see that much noise on my CRT, but on this machine with TFT I can see it.
I think it was more or less standard GI settings (medium), I´ll have to see what method I can use in the end - as there will be camere movement and object movement. Could well be, that I work without GI at the end.
But I think it´s probably more one of the area lights, as they travel through s lot of fine structures and so the noise could come from the area shadows.

the environment is cool!.
the thing that doesn't fit is the doll lol
did you use area light? if yes is no decay checked?
thanks
Walli
10-24-2007, 12:19 PM
yes, area lights - decay is active.

i would switch to IRmap + brute force to get rid of the noise...
or make the LC samples bigger
also use AA with threashold 0.005 for best production result:-)
cheers

I started texturing the first segment of the wall, here a test inside Cinema (pure texture only one point light without GI)

Walli,
Nice textures. I have noticed in a lot of posts that you can clearly see when the texture starts to repeat. How do you avoid that?

in the case above, it´s simply one texture that fits onto the object. But in other cases, there are several options to minimize visible tiling:
-combine bitmaps with 3D noise
-mix several bitmaps (one which can be used as base, without prominent features and one which is detailed and only will be mixxed in at some places )
-use a texture that doesn´t have to prominent features and add a second texture (tiling turned of) and place it where it is needed (rotated , scaled)
-use 3D objects to cover problematic areas

for sure not ;-)
Perhaps you know this feeling, when you only can work in spare-sparetime and the scene evolves slowly. At some point you totaly loose the ability to judge, if it´s okay or not.
I just reached a point where I am close to drop the scene. Actually I like some of the other perpectives, but the one from the video I am not sure about...

No, don't drop this piece. As it stands it's shaping up to be the most ambitious piece on the forum at the moment and the mix of live action and CGI is something I think everyone here will wish to see progress.
Adding sound would help sell the shot, especially as you have some events you could key into like the elevator and the shower of sparks.
Nice work. More please.
Cheers

...nice Project Walli...so I will wait what there will come next.

How long did that take to render and on what machine?

thanks ;-)
To be flexible in the post, I am rendering in several layers. Also because Vray Proxies didn´t show up so far ;-)
Time per frame varies from layer to layer, but in most cases not much more then 2 minutes. Actually in some cases the time for exporting takes almost more time compared to pure rendering time.
on 3d-worxx we have some info on this project, the firt part covers the "background".
In upcoming parts we will show some making of vfx and also making of our greenscreen ;-)

made some progress on the weekend. I guess that now we will do some compositing tests to decide on perspective - then I can start to add the last details

It's quite aceduding man !
The only one thing which don't like very much is the unrealism of the blue wires.

Nice! One of the things which stick out is the fact that the actor's lighting does not change with the heavy flickering you have going on. That would add a lot of realism.

you are perfectly right, thats also one of my main concerns and I already made seome tests a while ago:
http://www.wallis-eck.de/bigger2/space/tests/Cockpitb.avi
Also some others and I think a mixture of them will do the trick, in case we can´t reshoot the scene with someone flickering a light in the back ;-)

Roto work still to be done ;-)

And here a shot we didn´t plan. So I had to use some "rest" footage of Myra, stabilize and then map on a lowpoly head. The helmet is much more detailed and so covers the lowpoly face
