View Full Version : Slow Material Response [solved]

Hi Renato/Stefan,

Double Clicking on a material to open/change it's settings seems to be very very slow and sluggish at the moment. It takes several seconds for C4D to calculate the preview icon and material. It get's worse if you have quite a few vray materials in your scene. I am sure this can be fixed somehow as it really slows down the workflow.

hi

I seem tot have the same problem. When I choose the vray material with the filebutton, it takes a couple of seconds (while c4dmaterial appears direct). Also the red square around the material takes sometimes almost 45 seconds to a minute to go away. My jpegs for the materials stand together on a internal harddrive.

Another thing also: when I render the image, the first time it's fast, when I make a adjustment (like a bump adding or moving a piece of furniture,..) it renders like 10 times slower! Same file (first render 18 minutes - bump added -> render again : time is 1h 28minutes). Is this normal? I didn't change the rendersettings.

I render on a mac pro 8core. But actually, I think vray uses them totally.
Or must I activate somthing in vray to use all treaths? Like in maxwell?
Other plugins are Maxwell render. Last night I set a image ready to render in Vray on 3500-3000 pixels -high quality - mapping exponential 4-3- other settings default . After 8 hours it didn't even passed the first engine. From maxwell I 'm used that it takes so long, but after 8 hours I have a good image. But when I see the rendertimes on this forum, I can't seem to match them with a heavier machine.

What can I do?

Greets,

Inge

I have noticed this also, but from my experience it is due to Cinema looking through lengthy file hierarchies, or large bitmaps used in materials. If I use Cinema's prefereces to map texture paths to top level textures folders that have multiple sub folders of textures, there is a dramatic slow down in pulling up the material editing window if a bitmap is used that is many sub levels down. If all textures are copied to local project tex folder, and preferences are not set for Cinema to search, then the material editor is zippy. If a large, 2000x2000+ bitmap is used, I do notice a slow down in working with material editor, more so with vray material, even when in local tex folder. But if simple vray material, say diffuse color and reflection only, editor responds as would be expected. Im OSX 10.4.1, 2x2ghz Intel, Cinema 10.111, Vray 1.05

Hi everyone,

I've send a file to Stefan to chek out the troubles. Besides the too high rendersettings there was nothing wrong. So I reinstalled cinema 4d. Well it makes all the difference of the world. The slow responses are gone, renderings are top speed now (e.g. the file Stefan send me back rendered at 3624 X 2448 pixels for 1 H 18m 33 sec. ; the same file after reinstalling rendered at same settings and pixels : 18m 24s !!! I gained a hour!!)

So my advice: GO GET YOUR TRASHBINS!!! :) and reinstall C4D, VRAY, ...!

(My plugins (maxwell, riptide, tuilegen, photomatch, mograph) that where installed before, are back in so that didn't gave the problem. Somewhere down the line C4D got corrupted or something...i don't know...But now it's superfine!

MMMm thanks for the tip.. I have a bit slow material response as well.
Perhaps it is best to reinstall C4D then....

Peace,

Hi all,
I re-installed and ran my update to r10.111 and then re-installed vray, but i haven't seen any noteable speed difference in my material editor nor render time. Also, my textures appear on materials in material window but seem to disappear when i double click on them and open them in material editor. Any thoughts?

Same problem here. Also, when I open a bigger material window, it is way to slow and sometimes crashes my computer. FYI, I have an Intel Quad with 4 Gb Ram

Is there a solution for this in 1.1? ''

Cheers!

this only happen when you start vray its normal to take 1 to 2 seconds to verify vray

i work on an intel quad and intel octo macpro, and have neither slowdown nor crashes. only the very first time you start vray it tahes 1-2 seconds to load the vray plugin.

are you sure your c4d install is correct. or do you have any conflicts with plugins? please check the c4d concole if there are any notes from c4d.

please also check if this happens also woth the standard layour or only with custom layouts.

Yes afternooncoffeeboy,

If fact I do. All 10 of them. But I never experienced problems with that and AR. How many do you recommend me to have the most for VrayforC4D working fluently?

Thanks

well, unfortunately i cant recommend anything here but all i know is that once i set a whole partition (not only textures on it) as texture path and a lot more...then my loadin' times took ages and i tried different things out...now i only have 2 or 3 texture pathes (only textures in it).

i hope this will fix your problem. let me know if this has worked out.

I have the same slowdown here. Simple steps:

- create a new VRay material

Then you see the material icon trying to build but it takes around 9 seconds for the preview to build. No textures, no paths or whatever... Any edit I try to make to a channel results in another 9 second wait.

This is the first time this happens in the two months that I have been using VRay now so there must be something in the new VRay system?

Using a MacPro 8 core with 8Gb of RAM and OS X 10.5 (leopard) Cinema version 10.506

if it's any help:

Here on a G5 quad OSX10,4,11 with 2gigaRAM
it also gives a ±9 seconds preview delay (large + medium preview)
when making a new material and when editing a material
happens in the new 1.0821 release and in the previous one...

Sometimes (not always) when i restart c4d it's only 5sec.
but then again sometimes around 12sec. between
clicking on 'new vraymaterial' and when the little material sphere appears in the manager
it also looks like the timedelay in the preview has nothing to do with the
complexity of the material.

just my 2cents, i didn't really experienced it as a bug untill i saw this thread, more a slow system and a good reason to get a octomac 8)

I have reset VRay to the older version (from october) and experience no more delays... (nice thing about time machine to just go back a few days and copy the old plug-ins and libs back in...)

No more delays since using the older version. So I will wait for this to clear up...

the reason for slow material responde on 1.8 is found and vlado already works on this.

One thing I noticed is that the materials now default to medium quality for the preview, where it had been set to low. Setting them back to low quality speeds up the preview quite a bit.
