Thanks Franz,
it looks great and renders beautifully.
is there any chance you can give a brief discription of what settings you changed in the Light Tag, Camera Tag and Render settings from the defualt and why. It would be a tremendous help. I can not believe you can get such a superb render from such a simple set up.

Hi to all,
the setup is very simple but there are some important things to learn.
al illumination wase made by physun and Sky.
when you use th physical camera make shure to set the "intensity multiplier" to 1 and not move this, the explosure is totaly controlled by camera, Fstop, iso and SSpead.
make shure to use an exponential colormapping to balance brigth and dark area.
About GI:
The primary bounce are setted tu irradiance map, the only parameter modified to defalt is "max rate" from 0 to -1 this is a metod to make a litle bit less detailed GI solution with less render time.
look at secondary bounce, light cash, the subdivision can be seted fron 400 to 1500 to increase/decrase quality of gi make shure to set n° of pass with the same n° of core in your PC because evry pass is rendered in a single tread.
i hope is ok for you

Just a quick note...
This scene rendered in 33 seconds on an 8 core MacPro!
I hope to be learning soon how to create materials, control lights and camera's so that I can really create some great images with VRay.

By the way...
I rendered a small animation with this scene moving the camera slowly to the red chai at the window. I saw some serious flickering of light and in one frame the walls suddenly disappeared!
Could the developers check this behaviour?
I'm working with C4D R10.111 Mac Os X 10.4.10

Have a look at this tut:

It looks like you do things quite differently for animation.

Hi Franz,
When you say: make the n° of passes the same as the number of cores in your PC I am not quite sure what you mean... I have a 8 core but that should surely not mean only 8 passes right? Should it be a multiple of eight in case of an 8 core? 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc?

As i studied your settings
secondary ray bias is set to "0"
i don't know how the final version is set to but if things overlap should not 0,01 be used for that.
my only notice
i just was curious

It's like if my AA setting are not working... the first chair is never as clean as yours :(
What are your parameters ......
Thanks for your help.

I have tried about everything, but I never have a clean image like yours...
one thing to remember is that VRAY is using AA on the full dynamic range of the scene so in areas that are pushed up above 1.0 the AA is no longer apparent (it is there but you would only see it if you save as a 32bit float format like .hdr and reduce the exposure).
if you don't like this effect you can turn on sub-pixel mapping and clamp output in the colour mapping section of the bridge settings. this will give you a less accurate output but in someways it looks more pleasing to the eye as it removes the jaggies in very bright areas of the image.
cheers, simon w.

hi malindis,
preaps your render is in low res , (640x480)
my AA settings is good for more pixels images if you want a good AA in a smal images you should incrase the subdivision of AA, and make you shure to have only 3 subdivision difference from the low value to the high value, like 1-4 or 3-6.

Havin the same trouble with the vertical lines on the image.
even with fixed aa of 4 it looks jaggy.
any further suggestions?

any further suggestions?
am i invisible here?
cheers, simon w.
p.s. as i mentioned further up in the thread the main problem with the scene is that there are a lot of values pushed above 1.0 because of how bright the sun is so the AA is being swamped by the high dynamic range of the image.
you just need to turn on sub-pixel mapping and clamp output to make sure VRAY works as you expect (even though this is not strictly accurate).

yes, thanks Simon,
as he says for very dynamic images turn that on,

the AA certainly needs a lot of experimenting if you are used to the way that cinema works - in VRAY all the sampling is tied together whereas in cinema you have separate sampling for textures and the image.
the adaptive DMC sampling seems most like cinema where you can set a min and max subdivision (just like best 1x1 4x4) and then control it using a colour threshold.
the next test for me will be trying out the universal settings that vlado recommends in the Max VRAY manual - in general i like the idea of controlling everything through just a couple of quality controls even if it takes longer to render.
they can be found here: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R1/
cheers, simon w.
p.s. the Max manual also has many examples on how the samplers works with textures so this is a good read too: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R1/examples_image_sampler.htm
once i had tried out these tests it was a lot clearer how VRAY works.

Hello simonw...
I have tried this but it doesn't work... I still don't have a clean image
Will try to increase the AA subdivison

Folks, don't forget about the kitchenscene from cgtalks renderengine
comparison!
It's a great scene to experiment with
and needs other tweaks than the provided scene with the chairs.

woops! where did the contrast go?
It`s just a test, i don`t no, did he more tests, to make more contrast image.
Don`t think that it`s a image, it`s betaimage ;-)

I use the one provided in the file... I don't touch anything :-(
In fact if I generate an image with size 1920x1080 i have the same scene quality as Renato... But when i'm trying to render the scene in 640x480 I can't find the right AA setting to have a clean image...
Thanks very much for you help.

Thank you so very much for the scene!
I'm so impressed by the speed.
I'm on an Quad 3Ghz MacPro, and this just rendered like butter fullscreen 23" screen in 1min50...
Stefan Renato and the other gods, you have done a damn good job on this beast!!
