I am setting up a new render, as always, I set up my lighting first in greyscale before applying materials and textures...
I am using the great HQ plants, here in the attached example...render time was 7:50 seconds.

When i turn on my plants that have all supplied textures something goes wrong. At present I am at 25 minutes and it has not even done 10 percent of the first pre pass. I am using GI preset number 9...

it would appear that DML was the culprit...I recently re-installed vray and the memory limit was still at 400. I have 12 gig of ram and have now bumped it up to 8000...

The result is this with a time of 16:39. So the rendering has basically doubled in length now but to me this makes sense..experts out there...does this seem approx correct?

well it will of course render longer with textures and real materials.
you compare without materials to a render with materials. this certainly seems relatively normal,

there you have specularity, refections, trasnlucency and all to calculate.
also texture have to be load, depending whre you have saved that and the speed of the disk this also takes time(specially saving on NAS systems is slow)

as you did in second test it is importantto set the dynamic ram limit to a value higheer than400, what version do you use that you have 400 set and not 0 (as is default in newer versions)?

strange, i have the newest version stefan...it was at 400, i have just recently reinstalled...

hi tom.

also please not that we use 2side materials, you can render without it, just reassign material from 2side. to simple (advanced ^) ) one, it will give you speed up in rendering, but you will lost some quality of lighting of leaves.

also you can disable specular layer for example, it also gives really big speed up. ;-)

thanks again stefan...i am of course aware that materials, textures, etc...will bump up the render times and sometimes exponentially...
i guess i was just wondering what other users with higher end machines are finding and what they thought about the double amount of time...

ahh, thanks tong, excellent ideas for speeding up test renders, i haven't even had time to delve into the material settings of your plants so was not aware you were using double sided materials...thanks again...
