View Full Version : How do you like VrayforC4D on OS X?
Because I use C4D 9.6 on OS X (10.4.10), I am not able to use Vray yet. At the moment it is only compatible with C4D 10 and above on the Mac side. I don't know how long it will take to solve the problems with 9.6, so I am beginning to think about upgrading Cinema to 10.5. But I'd like to hear some feedback from people that are already using it on OS X.
For those of you that have been using Vray on OS X for the last couple of months, what are your thoughts about it as a replacement for AR? I'm sure it's much faster, but what is the experience like day to day? Are there any roadblocks or limitations to look out for? Have you switched to Vray completely, or do you still need AR for certain tasks? I'd appreciate any opinions. C4D 10.5 looks great, but I am having a hard time justifying an $800 upgrade after just having paid for Vray.
Thanks,
Jack

Hi jack...
I can only recommend to upgrade...
Vray is really great. I'm using it for object visualisation and also architectural visualisation, and just for this last point it's really worth the upgrade... I'm not using AR at all...

I think you will in ,general terms, get more by upgrading to R10.5.
Not only for Vray but you will find that R9 now will rapidly be less supported
in term of basically anything (third party stuff, downloads etc).
I'd say that R9 will get "R8 status" very soon, that is, it is simply getting to old.

Hi Jack,
I'm working on a mac pro 8 core, and I always used AR. Now that I bought Vray, I don't even consider to use Ar again. Vray is just more faster and flawless (with AR I get some ugly circles sometimes, especially with larger pixels settings + high rendertimes). I'm working now for a month with Vray and I'm still learning (testing everything). But in the meantime the renders are great and superfast and I can only recommend it to you. Next week I starting on my first animation. I hope it works out fine...but actually I'm very confident in it...also knowing the people on this forum and Stefan are a great help if you're stuck... they're really awesome!
Join the club :D !

Thanks for all the replies. It sounds like VrayforC4d is working well for you on OS X. I just have to figure out when to make the extra investment in C4D 10.5.
Thanks,
Jack

the vraybridge is production ready with the version we have now,
th integration is solid,
there's no need to go back to AR, vrayforc4d can do everything you want from AR, AR can still be useful for AO but in general vray does every thing faster
The only thing missing is a in-depth manual

I am waiting for version 1.1 and see if it works better with my work flow. I have tested it with a couple of projects and works fine. But for our workflow still needs improvements like a better visualization of the alpha channels on the viewport and more speed in the pre-visualization of vray materials.

Well, as to material preview, I'm waiting for the correct AA in the preview. The rest is just great.

Thanks for your answer Stefan.
I have:
3 GHz Quad Intel Xeon
Memory: 4 GB
Mac OS 10.5.1
Cinema 4D 10.506 (but I had the problem also with 10.111)
VrayforC4D 1.0821 (also a slow material response with 1.05)
- I am using image based textures and all of them are in a "tex" folder next to my C4D file.
- I tested also a small scene with fewer (20 jpgs) textures and still have a 10 second delay for the material preview
- I set the preview quality to low. The delay is the same
- Decreasing the original size of the images (600 px wide) does not improve the pre-visualization (still 10 seconds)
- Re-started C4D I can not get the previews anymore (Just a black plane) This has happened before. But still I can render the image normally :? (see picture)
- In the thread "slow material response" I was adviced not to have many texture paths, so I erased all of them, but nothing improved

Sometimes the delay happens on the previews of my material editor, like it was rendering the materials
Best regards,
Diego

Both materials have the same textures with the same sampling.
